Reyita is the life story of a black woman whose life spanned the century. Based on extensive interviews and thorough archival research, Reyita is a vibrant testimony which deals with the intimate and public events in the life of this thoughtful and hard-working woman.

As a child Reyita knew Batista - the last Cuban dictator before the revolution; she taught herself to read, remembered the stories of her enslaved ancestors, participated in black politics, lost one son in the revolutianary uprising and went on to have over a hundred grandchildren. She remembers songs and cures, and recounts the everyday concerns of an ordinary woman with an extraordinary will to live. Her story takes us into the heart of the black experience in Cuba in the twentieth century.
