Bringing an understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean into the learning environment.

Education Overview

The Latin America Bureau has provided a range of development education on Latin America for over 30 years. We have designed and taught courses at the City Lit Institute; coordinated various seminar series for the Institute for the Study of the Americas as well as pioneering particular ‘LAB style’ workshops at our previous offices in Amwell Street and at a range of Higher Education Institutes in the UK, including the Institute of Latin American Studies in Liverpool and at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. We have also taught highly successful language classes in Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish.

Starting from January 2010, LAB again offers day workshops on current issues in Latin America and the Caribbean. Each workshop is coordinated by documentary makers, researchers, activists or academics who are conducting pioneering research in their area of expertise. LAB workshops are based around participation and interaction, using ethnographic materials (audio-visual materials as well as written) and an approach that prioritises often unheard voices and the hidden faces of Latin America; most also include a guest speaker. Our often unique approach gives participants a chance to learn about the politics, economics and culture of Latin America in a stimulating and challenging way. Come prepared to learn, have fun and meet people. Some workshops/sessions will be filmed and will be available to access on this site in the future. For a list of workshops, and to register and enrol, please go to Saturday Workshops above.

LAB will also be offering a range of internships, from news editing to event organising. To register your interest and join the relevant group please go to the Internship page above.

We have also designed and provided language classes with a difference: the opportunity to learn Portuguese or Spanish using course materials about Latin America. These proved highly popular in the past and, depending on current interest, we would hope to offer these once again in 2010. Please go to Language Classes above to register your interest and join the relevant group.

Finally, please see our list of Academic Links & Classes to help you select a further course of study about Latin America and the Caribbean
